A "cairn" is a Gaelic term for a structure made of stacked stones. These act as a marker for a burial site, memorial, or landmark. The first Balmoral Pyramid was the "Purchase Cairn" after Prince Albert purchased the estate for Queen Victoria in 1852. The first stones were placed by both Queen Victoria and Albert.

Uamh is the Prince's Cairn and as the inscription explains, marks the traditional spot where Prince Charles Edward Stuart left Scotland for the last time after the 1745 Jacobite rising, never to return. It was the 20th September 1746 when Bonnie Prince Charlie sailed away in a French frigate, leaving behind the dream of restoring the Stuart.

Bonnie Prince Charlie came here ashore on 25 July 1745 aboard the French privateer the Du Teillay, but there were no throngs of Stuart supporters. That must have been quite a disappointment.

The Prince's Cairn 30 May 30 May We left the camp site at Portnadoran and headed off to explore. We headed for the most westerly point of the British Isles, Ardnamurchan lighthouse but, there were lots of other things to see first. We drove south and headed for the Prince's Cairn.

The Prince's Cairn stands on the shore of Loch nan Uamh and was placed here by the 1745 Association on 4 October 1956. It is well signposted from the A830 and reached down a short track from it.
