The Commando Monument just north of Spean Bridge is a large three-figure bronze statue commemorating the service and sacrifice given by thousands of Allied troops during the Second World War.

Royal Marines have been involved in a weekend of commemorations around Spean Bridge, the iconic Commando Memorial. The 40 marines - based at 43 Commando Fleet Protection Group Royal Marines at Her Majesty's Naval Base Clyde - turned out in support of the annual Royal Marines Association parade at the memorial in Fort William, Scotland.

Ever since its unveiling (see photo below) in 1952 by Her Majesty the Queen Mother serving Commandos and veterans gather at the Commando Memorial at Spean Bridge on Remembrance Sunday. A simple service of remembrance preceeded by a short march up the hill, where they are joined by their families and friends, as well as local people.

The site commands a wonderful view. It is situated at the junction of the Gairlochy Road, and the main Inverness to Fort William, about three quarters of a mile from Spean bridge, at the top of the hill. The Memorial was unveiled by Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother on Saturday 27th September 1952.

The commando memorial stands on the west side of the A82. It is just to the northwest of the small village of Spean Bridge. The largest settlement is Fort William to the south west. From Inverness, travel south along the A82 on the west side of Loch Ness. Stop off at Laggan Locks for a break if you need it.
