How important are golden ages? Relatively new player here, I played Civ 4 years ago and just got Civ 5 with G&K, no BNW. One thing I struggle with is whether or not golden ages are worth the investment in extra happiness. Should I just have enough happiness so my empire can function, or should I try to get excess happiness to get more golden ages?

Depends on what your plan is. Early game, even if you are not going for a culture victory, great works of art are usually better because of the 2 culture per turn (for social policies) and 2 tourism. Late game, when Great Work Slots are almost entirely filled up, that's when you use Golden Ages. You won't be doing that much with 2 culture and 2.

1 Answer Sorted by: 6 The base number of turn for the Taj Mahal is 15 a turn Golden Age. The Chichen Itza world wonder will increase that number by 50% (= 22 turns). Building the Taj Mahal as Darius resulted in a Golden Age of 33 turns (should only be 50% longer). Darius with Chichen Itza resulted in a 49 turn Golden Age.

13. The happiness accumulated during a Golden Age is completely wasted. It does not count towards the next Golden Age, it just vanishes (probably spent on steroids, the additional production has to come from somewhere). As far as I can tell, excess happiness during a Golden Age is mostly worthless, if you get a 30+ turn Golden Age you could.

I think that might be done to prevent continuous golden age. You are playing with a mod, so that mod may or may not add golden age points during a golden age.

In Civ 5, a golden age is a time where advancements in knowledge is mimicked, where every tile that generates coins, will produce an extra coin, whereas tiles that produce production hammers will generate an extra hammer.
